All Situations

Open Call

Submission date: July 15 to September 15, 2024 (before 23.59, Mexico City time)

SUBJECT:

In the early 1960s, Brazilian artist Lygia Clark (1920-1988) produced a series of sculptures called Bichos. One of these sculptures, titled “Monument to all situations”, is made from aluminum pieces that are interconnected with hinges, which give it movement and invite the audience to interact with it. This principle appears in all these constructions: being completely manipulable structures, the Bichos do not have a front and back, they never reach an ideal shape. The Bichos are mainly unstable, which is why they are at all times on the verge of collapse, unfolding with multiple possibilities.

We know that our reality consists, like Clark’s Bichos, of a multitude of simultaneous, coexisting and continuously moving planes. How can we, from architectural practice, accept the simultaneity and unpredictability of all situations? What are these crises, conditions, coexistences and realities that we should modify, question or celebrate in the present-day? We invite the participants of this call to create an exhibition for LIGA in which they respond, freely, to some of these concerns contained in Clark’s work and in its provocative title “Monument to all situations.”

We are open to real and/or imaginary architectural projects that appeal to the creation of the previously raised theme. The proposal must be materialized in an exhibition format within the LIGA gallery space.

This is the third open call for LIGA, Space for Architecture. The first, published in 2015, was called “Invisible Geometries” and was executed between February and May 2016 by the Brazilian team of Vão + Marina Canhadas (LIGA 21: “Subsolanus”). The second call, “Imaginal Machines”, had the Mexican collective “Panósmico” (LIGA 31: “Hydrographic Auscultation Circuit”) as the winner and was presented between November 2019 and January 2020.
