As a photographer and architect, capturing the Heroic Military College was a spatial challenge due to the scale of the project. In our field, we often work with smaller-scale projects, typically residential. Capturing the spatial quality and monumentality of the College proved to be demanding, given the complex geometry of the buildings and their material uniformity. This series of volumes rising from the ground creates a highly ordered interplay between solid and void, shaping the space and establishing a strong connection with its context.
Once I moved past the initial awe inspired by the sheer monumentality of the College and began to understand it more clearly through the lens, I was able to explore other representations of the project — in this case, the values and routines of the military personnel who inhabit and train there every day. The Heroic Military College, like the entire army system, operates under strict rules and a structure grounded in core military values. Gestures of respect, hierarchy, and discipline are part of the identity of the place, adding an additional layer of reverence to the entire complex.
Two days were far too short to fully grasp the depth of this project, but they allowed us to get closer and begin to appreciate its historical and architectural significance, as well as what this immense structure represents for those who live and train within it every day.
