The Uncomfortable Giant

LIGA 40 – The Uncomfortable Giant (Per), Blanco, Estudio Jochamowitz Rivera y Ghezzi Novak.

March – May 2025

A long roll of stranded totora reeds, 80 linear meters in length, journeys from Lake Titicaca to nestle, curling and contorting, inside the 30 m² of LIGA, where it will rest for four months. This work is an elongated, distorted version of the traditional benches crafted by the uros of the community of the floating islands, made from the same totora reeds with which they build the entire world they inhabit. Born on the lake, the work has traveled to Mexico City, a place once a lake itself but drained during colonial times through human intervention. The giant now rests in a dry room, in a sinking city, where, centuries ago, there was a lake larger than Titicaca.

The object has something animal-like about it: it evokes the body of an enormous, ancient eel dwelling at the bottom of the lake. Its extreme elongation results in a weakened body, which had to be designed and fabricated in a sectioned and gnarled form to adapt to the gallery space and the containers that transported it. This giant embodies the contradictions of our contemporary reality. Its body, its fibers, its craftsmanship, and its long and arduous journey all weave the story of a territory in crisis, where the local and the planetary coexist in tension.

The piece was crafted by Percy Coila, a member of the community Uros Chulluni of the floating islands of the lake Titicaca. The video that is part of the exhibition was made by Patricio Ghezzi.

This exhibition was made possible thanks to the support of Cuprum, Berel, Grupo Habita, Panel Rey, MARQ, LUTRON, Grupo Habita, Difuso, Andean, Andino, Diez Company, Cli, Illusione y  Vértice
